June Meeting: Installation of Officers. Our annual Chapter Installation meeting and dinner will take place on the evening of Friday, June 11, 2004 The Dome at the Manor Restaurant in West Orange, NJLisa Bouchelleat The Manor (Telephone: 973-731-2360) located at 111 Prospect Ave, West Orange, NJ 07052. At the meeting, Mark Rodriguez, ASA, of MR Valuation Consulting, LLC will be installed as Chapter President, Karl Barrow, ASA, as Vice President, Scott Vandervliet, ASA, as Secretary, and Benjamin Williams, AM, as Treasurer. May Meeting: Liberty Hall Tour & Lecture  The May Chapter meeting on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Liberty Hall Historic Site and Museum located at 1003 Morris Ave, Union, NJ 07083-7120 (Telephone: 908-527-0400). The Museum curator will conduct a tour of the Hall and discuss its furniture, artifacts, and paintings. Admission is $10. Now a 23 acre National Historic site, Liberty Hall was built in 1772 by New Jersey's first governor, William Livingston, and was occupied until 1995 by seven generations of the Livingston/Kean family. The 50 room Italianate mansion is furnished with the family's large collection of textiles, portraits, silver, furniture, art and family memorabilia. It features an outstanding collection of 18th and 19th century furniture, formal gardens, an 1880s dollhouse, and portraits of the Livingston and Kean family members.

April Regional Meeting: Meadowlands Racetrack. Regional Governor Paul Roberts, ASA Hosted by New Jersey Chapter 73, the third Annual Region 15 Meeting will take place on Thursday, April 22, 2004. Outgoing Regional Governor Paul Roberts, ASA will be the guest of honor at the meeting, which will include a tour of the Meadowlands arena and track, and lectures on harness racing, and on the economic impact of redeveloping (a) the Monticello Raceway and (b) the Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands (Part I). The cost for Part I alone is $25. Or stay for cocktails and dinner (Part II) at the plush Pegasus Restaurant overlooking the New York skyline and enjoy an evening of harness racing with Paul. The cost for Part II is $45. The cost for the complete event (COMBO), including tour, lectures, dinner and racing is $60 (a $10 savings). Reservations with checks must be received by Friday, April 9, 2004, so don't delay. Guests are welcome. This event is sure to be a popular sellout. March Meeting: Networking Lunch  The March Chapter meeting will held on Wednesday, March 17, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Redd's Restaurant in Carlstadt, NJ. Please note the new meeting place. February Meeting: Real Property.  The February chapter meeting will be held on Monday, February 9, 2004 Parsippany Embassy Suites in the Embassy Suites Hotel at 909 Parsippany Blvd, Parsippany, NJ 07054-1222 (Telephone: 973-334-1440). This is a joint meeting with the New Jersey North Chapter of the National Association of Fee Appraisers. The Honorable Gary S. Stein, Associate Justice, New Jersey Supreme Court (Retired) will conduct a two-hour seminar (prompt seating at 3:45 p.m.) on "The Mount Laurel Doctrine." Retired NJ Supreme Court Associate Justice Gary S. SteinJustice Stein, whose court ruled on a number of Mount Laurel cases, will review the impact of three recent NJ Supreme Court decisions on land use law in New Jersey. He will discuss how market demand affects the process; how vacant land is treated; the effect of the "builder's remedy", which allows developers to sue to overthrow local laws; and the role of the Council on Affordable Housing (COAH), which establishes how much affordable housing a town must build.


January Meeting: Business Valuation.  The January chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. This will be a joint meeting with New York City Chapter 30. NJ Chapter Board Meeting at 4:30 p.m.. Joint Cocktails at Krystal's off the lobby start at 5:45 p.m. with dinner in the 12th Floor Observatory at 6:15 p.m.

Mr. Chapman, who specializes in counseling closely held businesses, will talk about Business Valuations, Contracts and the Art of the Deal. A member of the Board of Trustees of the Corporate and Business Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association since 1979, Mr. Chapman is listed in Best Lawyers in America as one of best corporate lawyers in the State of New Jersey.

December Meeting: Holiday Buffet & Auction. Holiday bells. The December chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 17th, 2003 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center. November Meeting: Appraising Wind Farms. The November chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Saddle Brook, NJ. ASA members are invited to attend the Board of Directors meeting from 4:30-5:45 p.m. in the 12th floor Observatory. Mentoring for Personal Property Candidates.  Frances Zeman, ASA, chair of ASA's Personal Property Committee and Director of Appraisal Resource Associates, Inc., will conduct a seminar on Saturday, November 1, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in Secaucus, NJ for personal property candidates seeking their AM and ASA designations. Ms. Zeman will review the AM and ASA requirements and the documentation needed to substantiate experience. She'll also discuss report writing and exam preparation. October Meeting: Executive Compensation. The October chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Paul Dorf, APDSaddle Brook, NJ. ASA members are invited to attend the Board of Directors meeting from 4:30-5:45 p.m. in the 12th floor Observatory. The guest speaker is Paul Dorf, APD, Managing Directory of Compensation Resources. Currently on the faculty at Seton Hall University, Prof. Dorf has taught Human Resource and Compensation courses at a number of universities. September Meeting: Value in the Meadowlands. The September chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at our new meeting location the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Saddle Brook, NJ. ASA members are invited to attend the Board of Directors meeting from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m. in the 12th floor Atrium (overlooking the Manhattan skyline). The Chapter meeting will get underway at 5:45 p.m. with a meet and greet in the first floor bar. Dinner begins at 6:15 p.m. in the Atrium. The cost is $30 for members and guests, but is free for ASA Candidates who joined the Chapter after September 1, 2002. Program Chair, Dorothy Nicklus, has invited a speaker from The Meadowlands Commission to talk about changes planned for this important northern New Jersey site. Joan D'Uva, CPA, ASA, ABVMay Meeting: Business Valuation.. The May chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Fairfield, NJ. Joan D'Uva, CPA, ASA, ABV will talk about changes in business valuation as they relate to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the ASA. Ms. D'Uva is a Senior Manager in the Litigation and Valuation Department of Amper, Politziner & Mattia, the Flemington, NJ accounting and consulting firm.

As part of the new mentoring program spearheaded by the ASA Real Property Committee, candidates who attend the May meeting will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with knowledgeable mentors. Kickstarting the pursuit of your ASA designation was never easier.

The second Annual Regional Joint Meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 and will include a trip to the Statue of Liberty, a tour of Ellis Island and dinner at the Mercantile Grill. The speaker will be The Honorable Charles A. Gargano, Chairman and CEO of the Empire State Development Corporation.

Ellis IslandThe tour group will meet at noon at Battery Park/South Ferry. Our Circle Line Ferry (telephone: 212-269-5755) will leave at 1:00 p.m. for the Statue of Liberty (the monument itself is still closed to visitors), and continue to Ellis Island (seen at left), where we'll take a professionally guided tour. After the tour, we'll adjourn to the Mercantile Grill (telephone: 212-482-1221) at 126 Pearl Street, a short walk from the ferry terminal.

Charles GarganoThe dinner meeting, beginning at 6:00 p.m., will feature a two-hour open bar and buffet dinner. Mr. Gargano, who is also Vice-Chairman of the the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, will address some of the economic and development issues facing New York in his talk, The Next Renaissance. His insights on the Ground Zero reconstruction are sure to be interesting.

April Chapter Meeting: Appraising Fine Wine. Grapes.The April Chapter meeting will be on Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 7:00 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel in Fairfield, NJ. Wayne Kompare, of Danbury, CT, a former officer of the ASA Hudson Valley Chapter will be the speaker. Wayne is an expert on fine wines, and will bring a variety of wines with him. This should be an exciting meeting -- a chance to learn how to valuate something many of us enjoy but may not know much about. The cost is $35 per person. Seminar: Pennsylvania Law. A two-hour seminar on Pennsylvania Law will be offered at the Secaucus Public Library & Business Resource Center located at 1379 Paterson Plank Rd, Secaucus, NJ 07094 on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 from 1:00-3:00 pm. The course will be taught by Robert Walker and is a requirement for appraisers who hold licenses in Pennsylvania. The cost is $40.


March Meeting: Real and Personal Property. The March chapter meeting will feature an expert on mold, an important emerging issue affecting both real and personal property. Tentative: Personal Property Symposium. In the planning stage is a symposium on collectibles to be held in March or April at 1379 Paterson Plank Rd, Secaucus, NJ 07094. Train passes through downtown commercial real estate.February Meeting: Commercial Real Estate. The February meeting on Commercial Real Estate will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Fairfield, NJ on Thursday, February 20, 2003 at 6:45 pm.  David T. Houston, MBA, SIOR, CRE, a respected expert and dynamic speaker, will talk about The Current Office and Industrial Real Estate Market in New Jersey. You won't want to miss Mr. Houston's insights into the national economy and current trends, and how they effects our lives and the way we do business. We have applied to the NJ State Board of Real Estate Appraisers for two hours of continuing education credit for this seminar. The cost is $30 for ASA members, and $35 for all others, and includes a buffet dinner. Members of the New Jersey Chapter of the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers and the Northeast New Jersey Chapter of the Appraisal Institute have been invited.

Hudson Valley Chapter Treasurer Alan Aimone, AM will talk at the Secaucus Public Library & Business Resource Center located at 1379 Paterson Plank Rd, Secaucus, NJ 07094 at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. Alan is a book appraiser and chief of Special Collections at the United States Military Academy, West Point. Mr. Aimone is the author, with his wife Barbara, of A User's Guide to the Official Records of the American Civil War. His talk will be on The Value of Books.


January Meeting: Topic to be announced. The January chapter meeting will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Fairfield, New Jersey on Wednesday, January 08, 2003. USPAP Course. Chapter 73 will offer the 15 hour USPAP course on Friday and Saturday, December 6th and 7th at the Radisson Hotel in Fairfield, New Jersey. NAIFA Real Property Seminar. ASA Chapter 73 member, Robert H. Scrivens, Jr., ASA will be the featured speaker at the Monday, November 18, 2002 meeting of the New Jersey North chapter of the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers in Parsippany, New Jersey. Mr. Scrivens' topic is Mortgage Fraud. NAIFA has applied to the New Jersey Board of Real Estate Appraisers for two hours of continuing education credit for the seminar. Joint NAIFA, AI, ASA Meeting. The National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers New Jersey North Chapter, the Northeast New Jersey Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, and ASA Northern New Jersey Chapter 73 will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, October 01, 2002.


West Point MuseumRegion-wide meeting and West Point Tour. The Hudson Valley ASA chapter has put together a joint meeting (Hudson Valley, New York City, Northern New Jersey, Northern New Jersey, Connecticut and Western New York chapters) and West point tour for Wednesday, May 1, 2002. Alan C. Aimone, chief of Special Collections at the United States Military Academy, West Point and a member of the Hudson Valley Chapter, will lead a tour (rain or shine) of the academy's military museum. Mr. Aimone is the author, with his wife Barbara, of A User's Guide to the Official Records of the American Civil War.

The 3:00 pm tour will be followed at 6:00 pm by a get-together, with cash bar, at the Hotel Thayer. Telephone: 1-800-247-5047. Dinner at the hotel is at 7:00 pm. The artist, Paul Gould who is well known for his landscape paintings of the Hudson Valley and his expertise Mute Swans over Bear Moutain Bridge by John Gould in painting restoration, will talk about Hudson Valley Painting. Paul is the son of John Gould, a noted artist in the Hudson Valley tradition whose watercolor Mute Swans Over Bear Mountain Bridge is seen at left.

Security Alert. Security at West Point is at Level 2. Cars will be stopped and may be inspected (hood, trunk, contents). Occupants will be asked for a photo I.D. (drivers license, passport). Bring a copy of the ASA meeting notice to document your business at the Point.
