Standards of Value
Kyle S. Garcia, Chapter 73 President, says:
Depending on the purpose of an appraisal, several generally accepted standards of value may be considered.
Fair Market Value (FMV). The price a willing buyer would pay a willing seller when both know the facts and neither is compelled to buy or sell.
Fair Value. In real estate, it is the same as FMV. In business, it is the price determined by legal precedent when a dissenting stockholder asks to have his shares appraised.
Investment Value. The value based on expected earnings or monetary return to a particular investor or owner. Contrast this to FMV which is hypothetical and impersonal.
Liquidation Value. The net amount that can be realized if a business is terminated and the assets sold piecemeal.
Your ASA appraiser will examine these and other standards to arrive at an opinion you can rely on.

Professional Achievement: Certification
Congratulations too to our past Chapter 73 President, Rufino Fernandez, Jr., J.D., ASA. A principal and business valuation appraiser at Aronson & Fernandez PA in Livingston, NJ, Rufion has recently achieved certification as an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA). Rufino's ASA certification is a mark both of individual achievement and of assurance to his clients. The certification is based on appraisal education, experience, intensive written and verbal examinations, and submission of acceptable appraisal reports. ASA candidates must have a four-year college degree (or the equivalent), a minimum of five years of full-time appraisal experience (or the equivalent), and must adhere to the ASA's Principles of Appraisal Practice and Code of Ethics, and to USPAP. But it doesn't end there. As required by the Appraisal Foundation, ASA members must complete USPAP course work and qualify for mandatory recertification every five years. As Rufino knows, professionalism is a work in progress. Thanks, Rufino and congratulations!
